Help Stop Animal Cruelty

Help Yaps Animals
Rescuing abandoned animals from death row .. pounds or pets saved from unspeakable conditions can have endless expenses .. an abused neglected animal needs more vet care .. so the costs can be very high .. also these poor creatures would usually stay much longer with Yaps .. all expenses are covered by Yaps Animal Refuge.

In appreciation of their generous efforts we allocate FREE banner space to each of our Sponsors to advertise their business .. this can be very beneficial to any business as our Website has excellent continuous traffic .. banners will be linked to their business Website or email address .. in the case of there being No Website or email address we feature a small description with contact details and address.

In the case of an individual sponsoring a pet .. we mention the persons name and the animal they sponsored proudly on our Website.

Sponsoring a Special Animal
This is probably one of the most important programs of all .. without Individual Sponsorship for animals such as the ones who are mentioned in the stories below operations and special treatments can be financially out of reach .. leaving few options for a neglected .. mistreated and sick animal .. YAPS is a NON Profit organization .. so raising the money for every day tasks can be quiet difficult .. We are Asking if not Begging for Businesses .. Social Groups and Organizations to please become a Sponsor for a Yaps Special Animal .. Sponsorship is usually only for a few weeks and then once the animal has recovered it is Vet Checked and rehomed .. becoming the responsibility of the pets new family.
  • You can choose to Sponsor a Yaps Cat or Dog by advertising one of our abandoned pets in a newspaper .. this way is soooo successful .. the animal is adopted much sooner because of the media exposer.

  • A Company .. a School .. a Social Group .. a Club and Other Groups may want to Sponsor a Yaps Pet by raising money to help the sick and abused animals .. you can watch your sponsored pet recover ready for adoption .. all because of the kind loving Support you have dedicated .. your financial contribution will help make all the difference to a Yaps Pet.

Little Jo
Who is protecting these babies!

Little Jo is a just a 9 weeks old baby .. she is a Wolfhound X Collie .. she came to us on the 28th August 2007 .. she was saved from cruel owners who had neglected her so badly .. she was flea infested .. full of worms and her body was being eaten by mite .. she was covered in mange and infected sores from scratching .. she lived in the dirt and was just terrified when we picked her up and put her in the car .. she is so clean .. she travelled 4 hours to Yaps and waited to go to the toilet .. Jo arrived at Yaps in time (9.30am) for Dorothy to take her straight to the doctor .. please help us cover her Vet Account and give her the new start she deserves .. Click on Each Photo.

My First Bath
29th August 2007

Today I had my first Malaseb bath .. I really did not like it .. the only good point was that I was allowed to run around while I had this horrible sticky shampoo on me and then .. as I was a bit cold .. I stayed in the office with the Office Jo who is my special carer .. she is a kind human .. but while Dorothy was rinsing me .. I was screaming so much that people ran from everywhere .. thinking I was seriously hurt .. well apparently they will torture me like this every second day for a while .. but it might be worth it cause Dorothy said I'll be a real princess when it will be over .. meantime I guess I have to be brave .. well I'll try but I don't promise .. Little Jo's diary
September 2007

Hello everyone!
I am quickly dropping a line to give you all my update!
I am healing well apparently .. my skin is drying a lot but at least it's not so itchy anymore .. I am in my routine .. having my bath every 2nd day and this disgusting medication every morning.... not that I enjoy it .. but hey .. it's working .. the only thing is that with my skin is still too bfragile so I can't play with the other puppies .. and I really would like too .. at least sometimes I can run around YAPS with the big dogs like Bully who is our guard dog .. he is huge but he's very nice.
Today something TERRIBLE happened to me .. I broke a leg .. Well .. I thought I did .. I guess I've been running too fast .. or I turned to sharply maybe .. anyway it really hurt and I screamed and screamed and screamed (that's my speciality).. everybody at YAPS was very worried .. I couldn't put weight on my leg anymore .. so Dorothy put a thing around it and then I couldn't walk anymore at all because my leg was all straight and it wasn't very comfortable .. Oh and I get a lot of cuddles and kisses from everyone and also extra yummy food .. and a couple of hours later I was OK .. People at YAPS say I'm a bit of an actress .. a drama queen .. I don't know what they mean but it doesn't sound very nice .. Hey .. I've had a hard life so far .. they shouldn't forget about that .. Poor Me .. Click on Each Photo
Jo's going home Little Jo has been kindly adopted into a wonderful family .. after months of treatment and lots of tender loving care from YAPS staff and volunteers Little Jo is going home .. these photos are of Little Jo saying Good-Bye to Stan her best friend and playmate at Yaps .. He is still only a puppy born November 2006

Scruffy was saved by an un-expecting passer by on the 6th June 2007 .. he noticed Scruffy chained to a tree resting on dirty rags with a bag of old dry biscuits torn open near by .. they were hardly touched .. he was covered in mange .. as the man approached the property the dog pulled himself to his feet in pain and wagged his tail.

The man caringly asked What is wrong with that poor fellows leg
The owner answered Oh he broke it when he was a puppy and that is how it is now
What did the Vet say the man enquired
Haven't got time or money for Vets he said
He looks a nice boy can I have him the man shyly asked
Yeah take him he's no good for nothin' the owner replied.

The Vets have told us Scruffy's leg has few options if he wants a healthy full life .. the leg may have to come off .. if so the Doctor assures us within days Scruffy will be in no pain and will be bouncing round and lookin' for love with a kind understanding family .. his very first loving home .. Scruffy has never been cuddled or cared for .. it brings us to tears when you sit with him and he rests his head against your chest and waits for your re-action .. Click On Eack Photo.

Scruffy

UPDATE:
UPDATE 27th June 2007:
After the Doctors Xrayed Scruffy's leg this morning to prepare for surgery .. the Doctors found that the leg has started to fuse and the infection has retreated .. which means they now have the option of saving his leg .. although it will be stiff .. there will be NO PAIN .. Scruffy will stay at the clinic until he is desexed and tested for all other doggy problems he may have contacted while living in such harsh conditions .. Scruffy will have a few more visits to his Doctor but all is looking good .

UPDATE 30th June 2007:
Scruffy is a new boy .. love is a wonderful thing .. he has been desexed .. and his leg is continuing to fuse as Scruffy's Doctor said it would.

Click On Eack Photo

UPDATE July 2007:
Scruffy is recovering really well .. he has some bad days .. but that is usually when he plays too rough with his best mate Rocco .. he is such a beautiful gentle boy .. so affectionate .. we can't wait for him to be ready to find his new family .. Scruffy's condition has also picked up and Dorothy said his last check up at the doctors was all good .. he is allowed to play outside the kennels now .. so he thinks he is pretty special .. he has lots of fun and heaps of cuddles out around the staff.

Scruffy was been adopted in September 2007 into a loving home out on a beautiful property with his new mum Jayne and lots of other pets.

On behalf of Scruffy and his mum Jayne .. YAPS would like to Thank Everyone Australia Wide .. who donated funds and those that wanted to Adopt Scruffy .. without you wonderful people pets like Scruffy have few options .. BRAVO!
UPDATE 5th October 2007:
Scruffy popped into YAPS to say hello today .. and boy is he looking really good .. his name is now Boris .. he was just back from the vet .. who is very happy with him .. the leg has healed well and the joint has fused properly so he can keep it now for sure .. he is grown up but he is not allowed to put any more weight on or it could be bad for his leg .. it was really good to see him again .. Scruffy's mum Jayne is soooo very nice and she adores him .. Jayne says he is the best dog ever .. but we knew that already of course .. he is so gentle and great with all the other animals on the farm .. horses .. cows .. chickens .. and Jayne said he was even laying down with a duck and her babies ducklings .. he was very happy to see us too so that was lovely .. what a great success story!

Woofy
The Most Cruelest Case of Neglect

Woofy is a dear little male Corgi X Fox Terrier .. he came to us on the 1st of June 2007 and you would think we had seen it all .. but there were many tears shed for Woofy as we bathed him gently and patted his bleeding sores .. he is approx: 2 years old but it is very hard to tell in his present condition .. Woofy is gentle and affectionate .. he loves all animals .. chickens ..geese .. cats .. dogs .. horses .. birds and kids .. he is silent and humble.

He was removed from abusive owners by a pig hunter who was asked to take Woofy out and shoot him because he stunk .. luckly for Woofy and a wonderful man he was taken to Yaps .. his treatment will take months of dedication from the Yaps Staff and we are hoping the public will Sponsor Woofy to help us cover his vet account .. there is nothing more we can tell you as the pictures say it all .. it is just horrifying .. Click On Eack Photo.

JUNE UPDATES:
Woofy is healing very quickly .. and Boy OH Boy has he got cheecky .. did I say silent and humble .. that's a wopper as he has so much to say now he is in no pain .. he wants to get out and play with the other dogs but until he has a little more fur we can't take the risk of broken skin incase of infection .. so a big Thank You Everyone!

Woofy

Hi Dorothy and Yaps Staff
Woofy has settled into his new home very well and is being spoilt rotten .. he and Ollie (our other dog) are getting on like old mates and love playing with their toys .. thanks for looking after him so well .. we are glad we can also help give by little Woofy a loving home and a new life without the trauma he has experienced in the past!

Cheers
Leanne And Colin (and Ollie)

Woofy     Woofy     Woofy     Woofy     Woofy     Woofy     Woofy     Woofy

Woofy's story is one of the most horrific we had seen for a while .. Woofy was with us for a long time while he recovered .. letting him go was hard in a way and choosing the right family was very important .. Woofy had families from all over Australia wanting to adopt him .. but the YAPS Team wanted him in Cairns so we could see him from time to time .. Woofy choose Leanne in his own way .. and Dorothy felt Leanne had that special something that would be right for Woofy .. the photos have proved she was right.

Love mends broken hearts

UPDATE October 2007:
Woofy came into YAPS for a vist with his mum Leanne and play mate Ollie .. Woofy looks sooo beautiful and happy .. what a wonderful surprise for the YAPS staff.

Love is waiting for you THIS POOR LITTLE GIRL WAS NEGLECTED AND THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS KIND OF ABUSE!

Missy is a Wolfhound X Puppy .. she had mange with no hair on her face or feet and sores on her small body .. it was some time before Missy was ready for adoption .. but Missy had wonderful Sponsors that helped pay for her treatment and many special people donated money and food .. others took the time to come out and simply just nursed her and give her much needed cuddles .. all of this was greatly appreciated by Yaps Staff and Missy.

Lucy
Unnecessary Neglect

Lucy was a female Labrador born in 1995 .. she came to us on September 2006 .. her owner was going to have her euthanased because she had passed her use by date .. one of Lucy's family members saved her and bought her to YAPS hoping someone would love her again .. Yaps took Lucy straight to the vet .. the nurses were almost vomiting as they took half a cut of pus and blood from one of her ears .. this was one of many trips to the vet.

Because Lucy had such badly infected ears .. one ear especially had a painfully serious on-going condition .. her ears had been infected for at least 3 years .. when Lucy arrived it was thought she may have to have an operation .. this was evidence of very sad case of neglect .. within days Lucy was fostered to a wonderful family and her treatment began .. thankfully after months of loving attention Lucy's ears began to clear up .. once Lucy was put on pain killers her family said Lucy came to life .. she wanted to play .. also her personality changed and she became quiet a character.
Lucy was 11 years old when she came to Yaps and a little over weight ..   this is what Lucy had to say to that remark:
Now you may think I am past my use by date but let me tell you No Way .. I just want to enjoy my later years going for nice walks with a kind person for me to take care of .. Oh yes they do say at YAPS that I do need to go on a diet .. like to see what they all look like when they are my age!!!

Lucys foster family fell in love with her and have adopted Lucy .. ears and all.

Lucy has a permanent home YEAH:
Lucy when she first came to Yaps
UPDATE 2006:
Lucy's ears seem to have cleared up pretty well .. we have also heard via the grapevine that Lucy has lost some weight and is feeling fantastic .. keep an eye on this page as we are going to have some undated pictures of the new Lucy .. A big Thank You to everyone who has helped Lucy and also a special Thank You to Lucy's new family.

Because of Lucy's age and the need for on-going treatment YAPS staff knew there was going to be a large vet account so they decided to put Lucy's photo up along with her story on YAPS Website and ask people to please sponsor her to help pay for her treatment .. needless to say the call was heard as far as New South Wales .. a steady flow of donations came in from near and far and Lucy's account was covered in full .. one dear Man had lost his wife and asked everybody at the funeral to put money aside for Lucy instead of flowers .. WOW that was amazing .. but without these sponsors .. animals like Lucy have few options .. SPONSORS ARE SOOOOO IMPORTANT .. Thank You everyone from Lucy and all of us here at Yaps.
UPDATE 2007:
Well it is a year on Sunday 2 October 2006 that we took Lucy home from you .. if you remember .. Lucy tipped the scales at 38kg .. which for a Lab is not unusual .. but diffidently too heavy .. a year later she is 10kg lighter and a different dog .. she also had a terrible ear infection that required 3 operations to get fixed .. the final one meaning a new hole being drilled in her ear to allow the ear to drain .. since the last one early on in the year she has been doing great and I think we are all relieved (both for the bank account and for Lucy's sake) that it seems something is finally working for her .. Lucy is 13 this year .. so she is getting on .. Luckily for us she has the enthusiasm and bounce-back mentality of an energiser bunny .. she is a loved and sparky member of the family .. She walks twice a day everyday and loves nothing more than mealtimes .. sleeping inside with us and playing in the surf (or in her waterbucket!).

All the best from Lucy .. Brooke amd Mum and Dad
