The Young Animal Protection Society Inc. has set up a Pregnant Dog Fostering Program with the approval of the Cairns City Council.
This is probably the most needy of all the programs .. usually the mummy is about to have the babies or has already had the puppies and has been abandoned.
The mother is usually hungry and distressed .. we need homes ready to take these families at a minutes notice .. Yaps assist as much as possible with the set up .. you will have on going support until the family is taken to Yaps for adoption.
The mother and puppies are returned to Yaps once the puppies are 4 weeks old or 6 weeks at the oldest .. they are vaccinated .. photos are taken for the website and the puppies are adopted as quickly as possible to the best families .. the mum is desexed and rehomed also.
We have been told by our foster mums that this is the most wonderful and rewarding experience you can imagine .. without these special foster families the fate of these pregnant mums is un-mentionable .. so please if you can share your home for a short time with a needy family call us now!
Do you know a retired person/couple or someone who works from home .. they maybe be alone most of the day and love animals .. maybe your mum or dad or a lonely neighbour .. these poor animals will fill their lifes for a time with so much laughter and joy .. 4 to 6 weeks is all we need them for .. or maybe you can help!
The RULES for fostering are:
 We have found it is more suitable to have families with NO other dogs for this special program.
In most cases families with very small children are not suitable for the program .. this is because usually we have no history of the pregnant mother.
Your yard must be Minimum 1200 high (4 Foot) and securely fenced .. a person from our organization must first visit the property to insure that this is so.
The mummy must wear one of Yaps ID tags at all times.
Each home must be prepared to spend quality time with the mother and the puppies daily .. your socializing with the babies is so very important .. when the puppies go to Yaps for adoption it is so much easier to home a little pup that is not frightened and timid .. the mother usually has never experienced the atmosphere of a normal loving family either .. it will be so important for you to be committed to this program.

Tammy fostered a beautiful pregnant staffy called Mocca .. Mocca had her puppies a week later .. Tammy and her family loved the experience and say they would recommend fostering to anyone .. needless to say they kept Mocca and helped YAPS rehome 6 gorgeous puppies.
