Max (Lion)
Hi Everyone at YAPS
I'd like to give you an update on Lion the Mastiff X I adopted from Yaps .. who is now called Max.
Last Monday (19th November 2007) Max .. together with his buddy Cassie .. whom you have met as we boarded them both with you a couple of weeks ago .. were exploring in the garden and I went to check on them as Cassie was barking constantly .. which normally means Max has found something to play with and she wants it .. I went around the driveway as the bottom part of our garden is partly fenced and full of fallen tree trunks to find out what all the commotion was about .. well they had both found a snake .. not just any snake but a Death Adder only the second deadliest in Queensland.
|
|
| Anyway I managed to coax them away and back to the house whilst my husband confirmed its identity .. about 20 minutes later Max was very .. very ill .. he was violently sick .. foaming at the mouth and literally dying in front of us .. we are fortunate enough to have a vet at the bottom of our road .. Marlin Coast Vet on the Cook Highway .. we rushed him there and was told that there was not much hope .. no discussions .. Max is part of this family and we love him dearly .. we asked the vet to do whatever it took .. so they whisked him off and did their best. Now .. I am not sure who is watching over Max but he certainly has some guardian angel who really knew it was not his time to go .. Max pulled through and was home by Wednesday that same week!
|
|
We have subsequently been told that not many vets in the Cairns area keep the anti-venom as it costs too much ($2,500!!) and does not have a long shelf life .. we were just so very lucky that we 1 we knew what had bitten him and 2 the vet was literally 2 minutes away and 3 they actually stocked the anti-venom!
I can confirm that the snake is now in snake heaven .. if you had witnessed what we did with Max .. I am sure you would agree it was the right thing to do!
We are virgins to this sort of environment as we have only been here for a few months .. having emigrated from a small Island called Jersey .. situated between England and France and I was so worried about them playing and getting poisoned by Cane Toads .. which we also have in abundance .. needless to say I am one paranoid Mum and worry each time they are out of sight!
Max is truly one very .. very lucky boy and we are equally very lucky to have him in our family and I hope you do not mind me sharing this story with you .. I will .. of course bring Max in for visits as the months go on .. I am sure he gets bigger every day!!
You all do an excellent job at Yaps and without you guys we would never have such a beautiful and loving dog as we do in Max!!
With kind regards

Rouge Dalmatian X Rotti (Dotweiler)
Hi Everyone at YAPS
I just thought I would send an update on how Rouge is going .. she had a rough start with a respiratory infection and it took quite a lot of effort to get over that one .. she had two trips to the vet but on the second go she really started to improve.
|
|
Now she is acting more and more like a dog every day and is even brave enough to come in the house at the same time as the cat!
Rouge is so well behaved .. she never makes a noise .. never makes a mess .. apart from the one hole she insists on re-digging every time its filled back in .. and she is the most caring little darling we have ever met.
We can not get over the way she begs and throws her front legs up to see you when she is excited .. it just makes you melt .. when she is scared or upset she likes us to hold her hands and she calms down really quickly.
|
|
Now that she is well and truly better we took her out for her first swim today with us at Ross and Locke and she had a ball!
Thank you for all your help in bringing Rougie back to good health!
We really appreciate the support you offered when she so quickly became sick when she came home .. hopefully we will be right for another 10 years now!
Bye for now
Amy .. Matt and Rouge

Rommell (Roger)
MY NEW HOME
To everyone at the YAPS in Cairns .. thanks for taking such good care of me while I was waiting for my new owners the Osbornes to come and collect me on 10th October 2007 and yes .. they did take their time.
As you can see my life in my new home is so tiring and you would be pleased to know that my mum has given up her couch for me (reluctantly of course!) .. well time to go back and do what I do best and spring a surpise attack on one of the kids from behind the couch or scare the life out of the dog Wally hehehehe.
Best Regards
Rommell (Roger)

Timex
Hi Carol
Timex was a previous resident of YAPS .. she is a Boxer X Cattle .. we adopted her a couple of months ago (2007) .. and I recently emailed you regarding some aggressive behaviour towards other dogs .. we have since bought her a Halti Collar and have gotten some advice from dog trainers and our vet as to how to manage it .. and since then she has not been so aggressive on our morning walks .. she is still wary of other dogs .. especially when Harry our other dog is with us .. and he even eyed up a kid on a bike .. so we will be taking care of those issues quick smart.
Timex is a happy healthy dog .. who is quite cheeky .. I woke up one morning last week to find her asleep on the glass table of our outdoor setting .. and she used our bedspread as a towel last week after her hydrobath because I forgot to shut the back door .. she also has a fetish for any food left on the kitchen bench .. she even had a good go at a vegetarian coconut curry I made one night .. hope you happy that she is doing so well.
Kind Regards
Katherine and Shem
