Nellie   (Katie)

Hi Yaps Staff
Katie is now named Nellie and she loves our male dog Toby to death and also us of course.

As you can see in the pictures Nellie has made herself quite at home .. these photos are from her first day with us.

With us Nellie is fantastic but she is still very scared when it comes to meeting others .. we will get her there though.

She really is a lovely little girl .. she loves to chew though!!! (Our poor lounge chairs..........)

The most important thing is that Toby (our other dog loves her) .. I have never seen two dogs that play so much like they do.

My Toby is 9 years old in January 2010 so he is doing really well to keep up with her.

Paxter

Hi Yaps Staff
PAXTER'S STORY

Another day in the dog house I thought to myself .. in my short life of two years I had two owners and now I was waiting for another family to adopt me.

Hello there Bruce I heard a quiet voice say .. looking up .. there were four faces staring back at me as the cage door was opened and a leash was clipped onto my collar.

He is a cute dog isn’t he Mum another voice chimed in .. Take him out for a little while and see how he goes .. then the leash was handed over to the four visitors.

After a short stint out I was returned to my pen .. I sighed and resigned myself to another long wait for a family of my own .. it was not too bad of a place to be waiting .. at least I was looked after .. fed and bathed.

The next weekend I was again allowed out of my pen and those same four faces put a harness .. collar and leash on me .. the collar smelt new and already had a tag with the name Paxter on it.

The harness and leash had a faint smell of someone else but no one else seemed to worry about it so I was not too concerned either.

The family was quite surprised when I jumped straight into the backseat of their car and settled down to wait .. Let us go and see my new home .. I was eager to see where I was to live.

Getting home there was the smell of someone else everywhere .. but I could not find the owner .. I had a good look around and was even allowed inside the house.

One of my new pack mates showed me my bowl and bed .. this was Missy’s but now it is yours .. her smell was still strong so I figured that she must not have gone too long ago.

I settled into life with my new family .. Alpha Male .. Alpha Female and 3 pack brothers .. when they spoke to me they always said Paxter which was confusing for me because that was not the name I was used to.

It was not too hard learning the new rules of my third family .. the smell of the other dog was everywhere and I quickly picked up on the areas I was not allowed to go.

Seeing that they had dog experience helped me relax knowing I was in good hands .. in the next few weeks I met the much older neighbours dog Bronson who also came from the pound.

My family often slipped him Schmackos and pigs ear treats through the fence .. but his owner did not seem to mind as I often saw my family and Bronson’s owner talking.

One day the gate was left open and I thought I would explore further afield from my new home .. I heard a voice calling Paxter Come since it was not my name .. I did not need to listen.

My Alpha Male came and got me only minutes later but he seemed pretty mad at me .. I was kept locked in the yard and when the gate or garage door was to be left opened I was tied up .. that was not really fair I thought!

After a few months and a couple of times where I tried to explore the neighbourhood on my own I always seemed to get into trouble with Alpha Male and Alpha Female .. I have finally realised the name Paxter is mine!

Roxy   and   Harrison

An Update for everyone at YAPS
Roxy came home with us from YAPS in December 2005 after having a terrible start to life.

It took a couple of years for her to really settle down .. lots and lots of walking and plenty of training one on one at home and eventually in a group situation at school gave her the confidence to tolerate other dogs.

We were told by one of the school trainers that Roxy would probably never share her home with another dog but this was not to be.

In January 2009 we found Harrison at YAPS whilst looking with a friend for a dog for them .. after a lot of behind the scenes arguing we decided that we were going to let Roxy decide if Harrison could come home with us.

We took Roxy out to YAPS and Dorothy helped us introduce the two .. Harrison despite his size is so gentle and playful .. he does not have a mean bone in his body.

Roxy seemed to tolerate him .. so we decided to give it a go .. the first 8 weeks were hard .. Harrison just wanted to play and Roxy just wanted him to go away.

It was one lunchtime when Roxy decided Harrison was too close to our lunch and she launched herself at him .. faster than we could really see Roxy was flat on her back .. she had just experienced a cranky Harrison the surprise on her face said it all.

That was when life started becoming easier .. Harrison stood his ground and Roxy liked it .. from that day on Roxy started playing with Harrison .. she teases him constantly and he loves the attention.

Harrison went to the same school as Roxy .. he passed with high marks but Roxy likes to remind him her marks were better.

We took Roxy back to school with Harrison and did a 2 dog one handler session .. the trainer did not recognise Roxy at first but once she did she could not believe the difference in attitude .. she was amazed.

In April of this year we bought ourselves (so we say) a holiday house .. 11 acres with a 5 acre lake .. we trip back and forth most weekends and when we get holidays the dogs go absolutely crazy with excitement when we get there.

We sometimes take a friend with us who owns a Labradoodle called Betty .. Harrison and Betty are in love .. Roxy even approves of the relationship and Betty another amazing situation.

Whilst we call it our holiday house the dogs call it their busy house .. there is so much to do running .. sunbaking .. running .. watching turtles .. running and swimming.

By the time they get back home to Cairns they are totally exhausted and have to take themselves off to bed immediately .. they are so tired they forget which bed is theirs.

So if you are thinking that a dog from YAPS is too hard then think again .. Yes some can be challenging and some can require more work than normal .. that is because humans have not always done the right thing by them.

Once they learn that not all humans are bad .. they can provide so much more love and devotion .. these dogs know what the real world is about and they really appreciate a home with comfort and love. Thanks YAPS for looking after Roxy and Harrison .. we could not imagine life without them.

Peppi

Hi there YAPS!
We adopted our Staffy Peppi in April 2007 .. at first she was going to be an outside dog however that lasted about a 2 days.

She quickly went from out side to inside and now has her own various beds throughout the house.

She is my husbands greatest love and I could be jealous about that but I love her too.

She has ruled the roost pretty much from the start and after a rocky start now even has a friendship (of sorts) with the family cat.

Peppi
Peppi

I was worried about adopting a dog not knowing if she would well behaved or not .. I need not have worried though as Peps is the best dog I have ever met.

Peps became very loved very quickly and I know her past owners where very upset to give her up .. I am hoping they may see her pictures and know she is happy and very loved.

Her hobbies are playing on the beach every day .. camping .. traveling in the troopy and sleeping on the couch while we watch TV.

She also helps to keep our cat in line by telling her off if she does something naughty even if we havent seen it.

Peppi
Peppi

Not long after we got her she chased off a man who had jumped our fence .. she very nearly got him too .. she is worth her weight in gold.

Obviously her previous owners loved her very much and really educated her well.

Peps is a happy girl and is great company .. I could not imagine life without her now.

Thanks Yaps

Thor   (Ted)

Hello everyone at YAPS!
Just a little update and some photos of Thor whom we adopted late August 2009.

Thor has settled in well and is very very spoilt .. well who could resist those eyes .. which is probably why he thinks he is a lap-dog .. although he is getting a bit too big.

Thor is extremely smart and obediant not to mention eager to learn and loves to follow me around everywhere.

He is always happy and has personality plus .. Thor loves his cuddles and treats.

Oh and he also snores .. will have to bring him in for a visit again sometime soon!!

Sidney   (Bundy)

Hi YAPS
We just wanted to thank you for introducing us to our favourite little man in the world .. SID!

We adopted Bundy in March 2009 and have not looked back .. we can not imagine not having him now .. he is a sweet .. fun .. ENERGETIC and loving little guy.

He loves to play rough with the boys and loves to smooch with the girls .. we renamed him Sid or Sidney when he is naughty.

Sid has a never-ending pile of toys and bones to keep him occupied when we are catching our breath from his long walks and swims.

He gets many long walks and camping trips to keep him active and healthy .. he likes keeping warm in his red vest on those cooler mornings.

He channelled his bad-boy side by wearing his red bandana at the 2009 RSPCA Dog Walk at Bluewater and was excited to be given the chance to lead the pack of 300 walkers.

I have attached a few photos of our boy.

Banjo   (Nick)

Hi Carol at YAPS
I thought I would send you a few pictures of Banjo .. he and Shandi get along so well .. Banjo is even the one bossing Shandi around sometimes.

Banjo may be small but he thinks he is tough .. his training is coming along very well .. he is proving to be a very smart boy.

He even does the cattle dog stalking when he and Shandi play .. it is very funny to watch .. Banjo is obsessed with our cat Zara although she does not like him that much.

You all probably remember that we adopted Shandi from Yaps also and of cause Nick was adopted in late September 2009.

Anyway I hope you enjoy the pictures

Tomtom

Hi there Dorothy and the rest of Yaps staff
Please find attached some pictures of Tomtom in his new home .. he is settling just fine and is a good little puppy.

Thank you for the good work you have done taking care of him .. pictured with him is Ruby our Ridgeback/Staffy X who came from Yaps about 10 years ago.

Ruby has taken on the job of being Tomtoms new mum with great enthusiasm.

Our cat (another Yaps graduate) is still sorting out the whole dog cat relationship thing with him but I think he has the idea now .. look but do not touch.

Keep up the good work.

Luna   (Velevet)

Hi YAPS Staff
Hi I'm Luna! I am having so much fun at my new home .. we go swimming at the beach and I am just big enough to jump the waves at Yorkeys now.

I walking at the dog park all the time .. my skin has been a bit itchy becuase I have had puppy mange but luckly the ladies at Yaps and the Airport Vet gave mum good advise and it is all been taken care of.

I have my mate Scruff come over for plays and sleep overs sometimes and I have got heaps of new friends that I have met at the beach.

My favourate thing to do is collect all the palm fronds in the back yard and put them in a pile for mum so she can put them in the garden sack.

Just a tip to all the other Yaps dogs out there .. wait a good half an hour after your owner has fallen asleep and then slowly one foot at a time get up on to the bed 'cause it is SO much more comfertable than that expensive bed that was bought for me.

If you are really quiet and still you can sleep there all night .. all in all life is GREAT thanks to the people at Yaps and my mum!

Thanks Guys

Claudias

Thank You YAPS
Hi my name is Jade .. I adopted claudias off YAPS a bit over a year ago (2008) now and just thought i would send some photos and just let you know how he is.

We now live down in Toowoomba where Claudie has a nice yard and a massive kennel .. he does enjoy chewing anything and everything but is forgiven pretty quickly.

Claudias is so affectionate and loving .. he is approx 25-30 kilograms but still thinks he is a lap dog and will gladly jump on your lap for a cuddle if he thinks he can get away with it .. Claudias is a much loved addition to our family.

Thank You
