Yaps Homeless Dogs

The Young Animal Protection Society Inc. has set up a Fostering Program with the approval of the Cairns Regional Council.

Christmas is a very busy times for our organization .. with an extra number of pets being abandoned .. but with YOU .. the local community helping out by fostering one of our dogs for a week or two. This gives other animals that may come into our care a chance to be re-homed or in the case of  lost animals .. a chance to find their owners.

The requirements for fostering Dogs for Xmas are:

• Your yard must be Minimum 1200 high (4 Foot) and securely fenced .. a person from our organization must first visit the property to insure that this is so.
• All YAPS dogs must wear one of our ID tags at all times.
• Each home must spend quality time with the dog daily .. getting it used to a daily household routine .. as a number of dogs have never experienced the atmosphere of a normal loving family.
• If you already have a dog you will have to bring your dog to YAPS for a meet and greet to ensure they get along.

Pregnant Dogs and Cats 

The Young Animal Protection Society Inc. has set up a Pregnant Dog and Cat Fostering Program.

This is probably the most needy of all the programs .. usually the mummy is about to have the babies or has already had the puppies/kittens and has been abandoned.

The mother is usually hungry and distressed .. we need homes ready to take these families at a minute’s notice .. YAPS assist as much as possible with the set up .. you will have on-going support until the family is brought back to YAPS for adoption.

The mother and puppies/kittens are returned to YAPS once the puppies/kittens are 4 weeks old or 6 weeks at the oldest .. they are vaccinated .. photos are taken for the website and the puppies are adopted as quickly as possible to the best families .. the mum is desexed and re-homed also.

We have been told by our foster mums that this is the most wonderful and rewarding experience you can imagine .. without these special foster families the fate of these pregnant mums is un-mentionable .. so please if you can share your home for a short time with a needy family call us now!

Do you know a retired person/couple or someone who works from home .. they maybe be alone most of the day and love animals .. maybe your mum or dad or a lonely neighbour .. these poor animals will fill their lives for a time with so much laughter and joy .. 4 to 6 weeks is all we need them for .. or maybe you can help!

The requirements for fostering Pregnant Dogs are: 

• We have found it is more suitable to have families with NO other dogs for this special program.
• In most cases families with very small children are not suitable for the program .. this is because usually we have no history of the pregnant mother.
• Your yard must be Minimum 1200 high (4 Foot) and securely fenced .. a person from our organization must first visit the property to insure that this is so.
• The mummy must wear a YAPS ID tags at all times.
• Each home must be prepared to spend quality time with the mother and the puppies daily .. your socializing with the babies is so very important .. when the puppies/kittens go to YAPS for adoption it is so much easier to home a little pup/kitten that is not frightened and timid .. the mother usually has never experienced the atmosphere of a normal loving family either .. it will be so important for you to be committed to this program.

Puppies/Kittens Under 6 Weeks

The Young Animal Protection Society Inc. has set up a Puppy Fostering Program.

The requirements for fostering are:

• Your yard must be securely fenced .. a person from our organization must first visit the property to insure that this is so.
• Each home must be prepared to spend quality time with the puppies/kittens daily .. your socializing with the babies is so very important .. when the puppies/kittens go to YAPS for adoption it is so much easier to home a little pup/kitten that is not frightened and timid.
• Puppies/Kittens are returned to YAPS for adoption at 6 weeks old .. they are vaccinated .. photos are taken for the website and the puppies are adopted as quickly as possible to the best families.
